Our Story
Built by students, for students — with a purpose bigger than math.
Mu Alpha Theta began with a simple conviction: that the discipline and joy of mathematics is worth sharing, and that the talent it builds can be turned outward to serve people who need it most.
From the founders
Why we started this.
We are Prateek Roy and Jonathan Rubin, two Eagan High School students who grew up loving math — and who were lucky enough to have mentors and programs like UMTYMP push us further than we thought we could go. We started Mu Alpha Theta to pass that gift forward: to coach younger students toward the same opportunities, for free.
But we wanted it to mean more than medals. So we built giving into the heart of the program. Every family we coach is invited to support underprivileged children in India — children for whom the daily necessities of life are not a given. Our goal is to instill excellence in math while using that education as a means of serving others, on an international scale.
This is only the beginning. Our first cohort already brought home a team trophy and individual medals. We can't wait to see how far the next group goes — and how many lives their effort can touch.

Our Mission · Telos — the end is the beginning
Excellence in mathematics, developed in service.
Mu Alpha Theta promotes the value of excellence in mathematics by developing leadership, service, and academic achievement. Our local chapter works to increase the availability of high-quality mathematical education — reaching out to our community through workshops and practice sessions.
Most importantly, we aim to extend that education beyond borders: providing students in underserved communities around the world with content through free online education, and directing our fundraising toward children in India who need it most.

Prateek Roy
President
A passionate problem-solver, Minnesota All-State Math Team member, and UMTYMP student who has represented Minnesota at the National Science Olympiad.
Jonathan Rubin
Volunteer Lead
A junior at Eagan High School completing his final year of UMTYMP. He has taken every AP math class and competes in Science Olympiad, Math Team, and more.
Avik Shah
Outreach Lead
A freshman at Eagan High School who completed two years of UMTYMP and is currently taking AP Calculus BC, alongside debate, Science Olympiad, and athletics.
Gabriel Rubin
Advanced Mathematics Tutor
Completed AP Calculus BC as a sophomore with a perfect score of 5 and is now enrolled in Multivariable Calculus at the University of Minnesota.
Aarav Shah
Advanced Mathematics Tutor
A ninth grader in his third year of UMTYMP, with two years of Saturday Morning Math (MATHCEP) and a love of helping younger students prepare for competitions.
